He obtained a degree in Natural Sciences at University of Barcelona (1947) and a PhD in 1950 with a dissertation on the vegetation in Montseny (Catalonia). He was a student and later collaborator of Josias Braun-Blanquet, and he introduced the sigmatist methodology for the study of vegetation in Catalonia.

Characterized by his modesty, Joan Cadevall who “did not aspire that his name could one day appear next to those of Costa, Trèmols, Vayreda…, all worthy scientists; would have been satisfied that it appeared after them, at a respectful distance…”, as explained by Pius Font i Quer on the long obituary he dedicated to him, became one of the leading scientists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Catalonia.

Professor Emeritus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, was the first woman admitted as a member of the Institut d´Estudis Catalans, Section of Biological Sciences (l978) and President of the Institució Catalana d´Història Natural (1980-81), affiliated Society of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans. She was also member of the Reial Acadèmia de Farmàcia de Catalunya.

He was graduated in Medicine and Surgery in the Real College of Surgery of Barcelona in 1843. He studied, among other places, in the School of Agriculture and Botany of the Meeting of Trade. In 1854 he was licensed in philosophy, section of Natural Sciences, in the University of Barcelona, where he was already a teacher.

He finished his pharmacy studies in the University of Barcelona where he became a teacher of botany between 1924 and 1930, he got his Ph.D. degree in Madrid in 1928. He extended his studies in the University of Géneve and in the botanical Institute of Berlin-Dahlem. He contributed to the knowledge of the Spanish plants with his thesis Estudios sobre la flora y la vegetación del macizo de Mágina (1929).

He finished chemistry studies in Barcelona (1908) and got his Ph.D. degree of pharmacy in 1914 in Madrid. In 1917 he became Professor of botany in the faculty of pharmacy at the Universitat de Barcelona (1917-1922),

Isern-Batlló Carrera, Joan

Joan Isern was born in Can Batlló de Setcases on September 25, 1821. During the 1849-50 academic year, in which he was taking the second year of Medicine, although he was already recognized for his knowledge of phytology, instructions were sent from Madrid to all the Spanish universities to propose candidates to occupy the position of botanical collector of the Museum of Natural Sciences. The University of Barcelona proposed the name of Joan Isern who went to Madrid, where he worked for more than a decade as collector and curator of the Museum and Royal Botanical Garden.

Botanist. Son of a noble landowner family in Altafulla, of the ancestral home of Ardenya, he was also known as Martí of Ardenya. Although he studied for two years at the University of Cervera, between 14 and 16 years of age, historians agree that he was an autodidact. Passionate for botany and chemistry, his father’s liberalism and the stability of the family’s finances allowed him to devote time to his studies.

He studied in Barcelona and Madrid. He got his Ph.D. degree in pharmacy. He was interested in the plant taxonomy and his work is showed in a plant book where he described a lot of new plant species from Spain, Morocco and Mauritania.

Doctorate in pharmacy (1882), he practiced in Sallent and Terrassa. He made the Flora of Pla de Bages and collaborated with Joan Cadevall on the Flora of Catalonia. He was also a professor at the Industrial School of Terrassa and a prominent linguist.

Sierra Ràfols, Eugeni

He began his training as a self-taught illustrator and plant collector under the guidance of Pius Font i Quer in the Department of Botany at the University of Barcelona when he was only fourteen years old. In 1937 he became a plant collector. Before the civil war broke out, he had already published the first illustrations in Flora de Catalunya (Flora of Catalonia, Cadevall i Font i Quer, 1913-1973) and in Iniciació a la Botànica (Introduction to Botany, Font i Quer, 1938).

He was graduated in Pharmacy in Barcelona and he got his PhD in Madrid in 1856. In 1861 he obtained the Chair of InorganicChemical Pharmacy of the University of Granada and after a short time he was transfered to that of the same name in the University of Barcelona, where he ended up being Dean of the Pharmaceutical College.

He was graduated in Pharmacy in Barcelona in 1868. He was military pharmacist in the carline army and this was, in fact, the only professional dedication that he exercised, because he was a farmer that was devoted to take care of the family estates, therefore he had a lot of free time for the cultivation of science.
