Cardona Florit, Mª Àngels

Ciutadella, Menorca 1940 - Barcelona 1991. Botanist

She was an open minded person who tried to improve the modern science introducing the newest advances.

She studied biological science in the University of Barcelona and got her degree in 1963. As she was very interested in doing an excellent research for her Ph.D., she worked very hard from 1964 to 1971 and made a full study about the life and the annual cycle of several plants and vegetable communities. Her study was done in different regions next to Barcelona where she had meteorological machines. During more than two years, she checked every week the weather conditions and the vegetation in the study regions. In 1972 she finished her Ph.D. and started working in the Botanical Department at the University of Barcelona until 1985. In 1986 she became a Professor of Vegetal Biology at the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona. After her Ph.D. she became interested in citotaxonomy, mainly studying the chromosomes and she started to know other researchers from other countries. She started to collaborate with Dra. Juliette Contandriopoulos from the University of Marsella, who was an expert of the oriental Mediterranean plants, as she was very interested in the plants from the Illes Balears. Dra. Cardona was a member of the Institució Catalana d’Història Natural, of the Societat d’Història Natural de Balears and other institutions from the country and abroad.
