Engineer, Naturalist.

He was a member of the Institucio Catalana d’Història Natural, where he became its secretary from 1904 to 1905 and its director in 1951. He was also the director of CAMPSA in 1931 in the republic region during the Spanish Civil War.

Botanist. Son of a noble landowner family in Altafulla, of the ancestral home of Ardenya, he was also known as Martí of Ardenya. Although he studied for two years at the University of Cervera, between 14 and 16 years of age, historians agree that he was an autodidact. Passionate for botany and chemistry, his father’s liberalism and the stability of the family’s finances allowed him to devote time to his studies.

Joaquim Mateu Sanpere was born on January 9 , 1921. In 1940, Mateu came into contact with the Museum of Zoology of Barcelona, specifically the section of Entomology, then directed by Francesc Español. Two years after this first contact in November 1942, Mateu began his military service, which lasted until June 1945.

Son of a family doctor, at the end of the Cuban War (1898) he moved with his family to Galicia, and afterwards to Catalonia, where he completed his higher education. In 1917, at the age of 20, he received his medical degree with extraordinary honors from the University of Barcelona. In 1923, he obtained his Ph.D. with Distinction at the University of Madrid.

In 1833 he finished his medicine studies in Barcelona. He emigrated to France and worked in the military health system of several cities. He was the director of the newspaper called: El Vapor (1835-36) and was exiled to the Canary Islands in 1837.

He studied in Cervera and in Barcelona, where he finished his law studies in 1845 despite he never worked as a lawyer. After being exiled in Perpignon, in 1848 came back to Barcelona and invented some mechanical items that he never showed.
