Graells Agüera, Marià de la Pau

Barcelona 1809 - Madrid 1899. Educator

He was teacher of zoology in the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales in 1837; he became Professor of anatomy and physiology in the University of Madrid in 1843 and was one of the founders of the Société Entomologique of France.

He introduced to Spain the study of fish and shellfish, he studied the phylloxera and discovered a lepidoptera Graellsia isabellae . Together with Pere Felip Monlau he translated into Spanish the botanical studies of Achille Richard and they published a calendar Calendario de Flora o épocas de floración de algunas plantas bajo el clima de Barcelona. He attended to a seminar in Bern in 1878 where there was signed the international agreement against phylloxera disease and he gave his life to fight against this vegetal parasite.
