He studied in the Junta de Comercio and he was one of the members of the first industrial engineers promotion.
From 1856 to 1860 he was Professor of general chemistry at the Escuela Industrial of Sevilla and later on Professor of organic chemistry (1860-1866). He was also director of the Escuela Industrial of Sevilla (1863-1866) and director of Escola Industrial of Barcelona (1868-1871), where he founded a mineral museum. In 1873 he became director of the Escola d'Arts i Oficis de Barcelona and in 1891 he went back to Sevilla as a Professor in the faculty of science. He was a member of several academies and scientific institutions and also a organiser of the Barcelona International Exhibition in 1888.
